Independence Day 1860

Come out to celebrate our nation’s birthday 1860s style. Enjoy free ice cream, a music concert, farmhouse tours, a vintage rules baseball game and other fun family activities.

The Macon County Conservation District invites everyone to join the free family fun in celebrating our nation’s birthday the old-fashioned way. Come to “Independence Day 1860” to learn how the holiday was celebrated in 1860 on Saturday, June 29th at Homestead Prairie Farm on the grounds of Rock Springs Conservation Area in Decatur. Homestead Prairie Farm is a circa 1860 house museum focusing on local and Illinois history.

Visitors are welcome to bring their lunch to picnic on the lawn at Homestead Prairie Farm on June 29 starting at Noon. Enjoy tours of Homestead Prairie Farm and old-time children’s games and toys until 4:00 p.m. At 1:30pm a free music concert by the Rock Springs Dulcimer Club will feature patriotic songs and favorite American tunes from the 1800s. A free ice cream social will follow immediately after the concert.

“The Independence Day 1860 event is a great opportunity for the community to come together, enjoy the outdoors, learn about history and have some free family fun,” said Brent Wielt, Historic Sites Manager. “Every year we have had a great response.”

Admission is free. Guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs. Rock Springs bike and hiking trails as well as the Rock Springs Nature Center will be open.

Rock Springs Nature Center is located on the southwestern edge of Decatur. To get to Rock Springs Center from Decatur, go south on Route 48 and turn right onto Rock Springs Road. Watch for signs. You can also reach Rock Springs Conservation Area by going south on Wyckles Road, crossing the Sangamon River bridge and turning left onto Rock Springs Road.
